KEN SOLOMON talks TENNIS with CRAIG SHAPIRO-URCS032

President and CEO of Tennis Channel, KEN SOLOMON discusses his illustrious TV career, the meteoric rise of TC and more.

From a college internship at Paramount Studios in the 1980s, Ken Solomon quickly started selling syndication to tertiary US markets. From there, among other things, he helped launched FX and build Fox into a TV powerhouse. He was there at the beginning of Dreamworks and became The President of Universal TV. 

Since 2006, he’s been the President and CEO of Tennis Channel, helping usher the network into the digital age and making it THE Network for Tennis in America. And beyond that, one of the fastest growing networks in the country.

He never posted wins over Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, Raul Ramirez or Jose Higueras, but he ball-boyed for them all. He never scored points off Martina Navritolova or Jim Courier but he runs the network they provide commentary on.

KEN SOLOMON breaks down his rise from performing magic tricks in borrowed loafers to helming the fastest growing network on TV. He tells us what its like to collaborate and compete with networks like ESPN. And he tells us why he’s confident we will be seeing the lost Djokovic tapes sometime in the future.

In November 2018 we interviewed Justin Gimelstob at the ATP Finals.

This was just after the Halloween incident and before the world (or us) knew what had occurred. We thought it was a good chat, albeit a bit odd, so we cut the episode. And we were about to release it when Justin returned to LA and was arrested on charges of battery.

At the time we didn’t think it appropriate to release the episode. And now, we don’t want to give it the platform of our other episodes but we think it’s a full of good insider information and is an interesting window into Justin’s mind at the time so rather than relinquish it to oblivion, we want to share it with our Patreon supporters.

ROMAN PROKES is a master racquet technician who has fashioned racquets for countless professionals as well as amateurs. Andre Agassi devoted a page in his biography to him. 

From Agassi to McEnroe to Djokovic, Prokes has not only altered their racquets but helped to transform their games. He molds grips, weights frames and rearranges stringing patterns. All in an effort to maximize the potential of the player.

He has shops in New York and Florida and travels with the US Davis Cup team. He also works closely with the USTA in Lake Nona.

On this episode, ROMAN PROKES tells us what current trends he’s seeing in tennis technology, what America required of him when he came over from Czechoslovakia and what specifically he did to Novak Djokovic’s racquet that put him back at #1.
